A document asks for permission again

This is the most common one, and nothing is broken. When you open a PDF from another app — an attachment, a chat, a share sheet — Android gives Papr access to that file for that visit only. Come back to it tomorrow and the access has quietly run out.

Papr keeps the document in your library and explains this when it happens. To get it back:

  1. Tap the document in your library as usual.
  2. When Papr says it needs permission again, tap Find file.
  3. Choose the same document in the picker that opens. Android will usually show it under Recent.
  4. That is it. Because you picked the file yourself this time, the access lasts, and the document opens straight from your library from now on.

If the file came from a chat app and you cannot find it in the picker, it may only exist inside that app. Save it to your device first, then open it from there.

Saving: over the original, or as a new file

When you save, Papr asks which you want. Saving over the original needs write access to that file, which Android grants when you pick a document yourself. If a file was opened read-only — some cloud providers do this — Papr will offer to write a new copy instead.

Your edits are held safely until you answer, including if the app is closed by Android in the meantime.

A document will not open

  • It asks for a password. The file is encrypted. Enter the password it was made with — Papr can then remove or change that protection from the export sheet if you want to.
  • It says the file could not be opened. The document has probably been moved, renamed or deleted since you last opened it. Find it again through Import.
  • It is not really a PDF. Some downloads arrive with a .pdf name but different contents. Opening it in another reader will usually confirm this quickly.

Where is the user guide?

Every installation includes a document called Papr — User guide at the top of your library. It walks through every tool in the app, and it cannot be deleted by accident. If you ever want it back at the top of the list, just open it.

Reporting a problem

Papr sends anonymous crash reports, so an outright crash usually reaches us on its own. What it cannot tell us is what you were trying to do, or that something worked but came out wrong — for those, a message from you is the only way we find out. What helps most:

  • Your phone model and Android version.
  • What you were doing, step by step, when it went wrong.
  • What you expected instead.
  • A screenshot, if it is something you can see. Please do not send a document containing personal information — a description is usually enough, and if we do need a file we will ask.

Asking for a feature

Worth asking. Papr is built around doing a small number of things properly on a phone, so not everything fits — but the list of what to build next comes largely from these messages.
